Terms
The rules for taking part in the $500 Experiment. They are short because there is no money involved, but please read them.
In effect from 13 October 2026.
What this is
Is Gambling Stupid? runs a public experiment in simulated sports betting. Participants get imaginary credits to bet on real games at real sportsbook prices, and we publish what happens. It is research and entertainment. It is not a gambling service.
Who runs it
Is Gambling Stupid? is run by TradeHawk HQ, operated by Christopher Fry. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean TradeHawk HQ.
Credits are imaginary
- Credits have no cash value and can never be bought, sold, transferred or redeemed.
- There are no deposits, withdrawals, prizes or rewards of any kind.
- Each season gives each participant one allocation of credits. There are no top-ups.
- We have no relationship with any sportsbook and never link to one, promote one or earn anything from one.
Who can take part
- You must be 18 or older, and an adult where you live. You confirm this when you join.
- One account per person. Duplicate or automated accounts may be removed.
- Keep your sign-in email secure; anyone who can read it can sign in as you.
How bets work
Every bet is placed and graded under the published betting rules. Prices, scores and results come from a third-party data provider. If the data was wrong and is corrected, affected bets are re-graded and the difference is shown as a correction. Our grading under the rules is final.
Fair play
Don’t try to break, overload or manipulate the site, exploit errors, or interfere with other participants. If something looks wrong, tell us and we’ll fix it. We may suspend or remove accounts that break these terms, and exclude their data from research.
Research and your data
The experiment is research, so taking part means your bets are included in the published results. You appear only as a subject number, and only in groups of at least 10 people; nothing published identifies you. You can withdraw from research at any time and keep betting. The privacy policy explains what we collect and your choices, and the methodology explains how the research works.
Leaving
You can withdraw from research, leave a season or delete your account at any time from your account page.
Seasons, changes and availability
We may end a season, start a new one, or pause the site. The betting rules for a season don’t change once its first bet is placed. If these terms change, we’ll show the new date here and ask you to accept them when you next join a season. The site is provided as is, without guarantees that it is always available or error-free.
If betting worries you
If gambling, real or imagined, is causing problems for you or someone you know, see where to get help.
